7 vital tips for caring for an Alaskan Malamute

Known for their striking appearance and thick, fluffy coat, Alaskan Malamutes are not only affectionate companions, but also require specific grooming. Here are seven vital tips to ensure your Malamute’s coat stays beautiful and healthy.

    1. Regular brushing

With a dense double coat, Malamutes need regular brushing, at least once a week, but more during shedding seasons. A buffing brush or shedding removal tool can effectively remove loose hairs and prevent matting.

    2. Bath frequency

Malamutes have a naturally clean coat that does not retain odors. Bathing should be infrequent, around once every two to three months, unless your dog gets exceptionally dirty. Always use a dog-safe shampoo to maintain the skin’s pH balance.

    3. Dealing with shedding

Twice a year, Malamutes ‘blow out’ their undercoat, causing a substantial shedding. During these periods, daily brushing and the use of a grooming rake or shedding removal tool can help control loose hair.

    4. Nail trim

Like all breeds, Malamutes require regular nail trims. If you can hear your dog’s nails on the floor, they are too long. Use a dog nail clipper or grinder and be careful to avoid cutting into the quick.

This highly rated nail grinder on Amazon makes nail trimming a breeze.

    5. Ear cleaning

Their pointy ears are generally healthy, but routine checks are needed. Clean them weekly with a vet-recommended ear cleaning solution and cotton balls. Never insert anything into the ear canal.

We like the PetMD brand of ear wipes available on Amazon.

    6. Dental care

Regular dental care is essential for oral health. Brush your Malamute’s teeth several times a week with a specific toothpaste for dogs. Dental chews can also help maintain good oral health.

For dogs who hate brushing, another good option is these tasty dental chews, available on Amazon.

    7. Avoid shaving

Shaving a Malamute is strongly discouraged. Their double coat is designed to protect them from both heat and cold. Shaving can interfere with your ability to regulate body temperature and could lead to sunburn.

    Frequent questions

Q1: How often should I brush my Alaskan Malamute? A1: Weekly brushing is recommended, with daily brushing during shedding seasons. Baths are usually only needed every two to three months.

Q2: My Malamute is shedding too much. This is normal? A2: Yes, Malamutes ‘blow out’ their undercoat twice a year, which causes a large shed. Regular brushing during these periods will help control loose fur.

Q3: Can I shave my Malamute in the summer to keep him cool? A3: No, the Malamute’s double coat protects them from both heat and cold. Shaving can interfere with temperature regulation and cause sunburn.

Q4: How can I prevent my Malamute’s coat from getting tangled? A4: Regular brushing helps prevent matting. If a mat forms, use a mat breaker or buffing brush to gently remove it.

Q5: How do I prevent my Malamute’s nails from getting too long? A5: Regular nail trims every 3-4 weeks will keep your nails at a proper length. If you don’t feel comfortable doing it yourself, a vet or groomer can help.

Q6: What should I do if my Malamute’s ears are red and smelly? A6: This could indicate an ear infection. Consult your vet for proper treatment.

Q7: How often should I brush my Malamute’s teeth? A7: The ideal is to brush several times a week. You can also provide dental chews for additional oral health support.

Grooming is an integral part of caring for your Alaskan Malamute. Regular maintenance will not only keep them looking their best, but will also contribute to their overall health and happiness.
