In this habit of making lists of everything, Pipper can boast of heading the list of the most famous dog in the country. It holds the honor of having been the first dog that has toured Spain, province by province. In Cáceres he made a stop in 2019. It was precisely as a result of that visit that the city council decided to open the palaces to the animals two years later. Then Pipper “opened his eyes” to the institutions of Cáceres.
Now, after setting that precedent and four years later, the tourist dog has returned to the city. This time, with his own program on TVE. The capital will be the protagonist of one of the chapters of its series, which aims to show destinations dog friendly in the country and why not, banish prejudices.
Pablo Muñoz, Pipper’s travel companion, spoke to this newspaper during a break from filming and expressed his satisfaction at returning to a city that sets an example of integration for pets in public spaces. He reports that they will remain in Cáceres until this Thursday and later, they will also make a stop in Monfragüe. The bulk of the chapter will be recorded in the surroundings of the historic center, where Pipper can be seen riding in a tuk-tuk, touring the loose Olive grove or entering various palaces. He will also support a solidarity initiative. The program will be broadcast on March 11 on La 2.
Muñoz points out that the city accumulates “many positive points” to be a friendly destination with dogs and with family tourism. He highlights, among other issues, the initiative that the city council has launched to force people to carry a bottle and clean up pet pee.
A pioneer city
In Cáceres, according to official statistics, there is already one dog for every three neighbors. The truth is that, conditioned by the figures or not, the capital is one of the most advantageous in terms of normalizing the presence of pets in public spaces. Muñoz agrees with this statement and ensures that “Cáceres is one step ahead.”
This is reflected in the fact that in recent years the number of businesses that allow their entry has increased. Up to 25% of the accommodations are ‘dog-friendly’, bars and shops have joined and recently, since last month, they can also access the interior of the Ruta del a Plata shopping center, one of the most frequented shopping spaces in the city.
In Spain, it is the owners of bars and restaurants who can choose whether or not to allow dogs access, according to Royal Decree 1021/22 that came into force in December.
